art-st-urban
With its fascinating history, the former Cistercian Abbey of St. Urban (first established in 1184 and used as the Psychiatric Clinic of the Canton of Lucerne after 1873) has been a center of culture and art throughout the centuries.
Nestled in the charming landscape around Lucerne, the abbey and its complex of buildings, now an important historical monument, provides the uniquely impressive surroundings of art-st-urban.
art-st-urban will bring together regional, national, and international artists, art experts, and art lovers from all over the world and will become a cultural platform, as well as a significant art center dedicated to showcasing and promoting art and providing art education.
art-st-urban actively encourages the dialogue between art and business and provides the ideal space for creative discourse in the exciting give-and-take between artistic creativity and entrepreneurship.
The synergies between art-st-urban and the already existing cultural programs of the former St. Urban Abbey with its historical and meticulously renovated rooms are unique.
Providing room for several hundred people, art-st-urban offers visitors a comprehensive cultural and artistic experience.
art-st-urban will be opened on October 2, 2005.
art pavilion
Pavilion E, built in 1907, formerly the «Psychiatric Clinic for Unruly Male Patients» was carefully renovated to accommodate a functional art operation, while, at the same time, preserving the character of the building. The renovations were fully funded by the original initators of the project.
The concept is based on showcasing art and providing art education and will incorporate not just visual art but performance art as well.
The generously dimensioned space will enable exhibitions and an art education program with a wide appeal. Exhibitions that create a dialogue between contemporary art and the historical signficance of the buildings, between the past and the future will be an integral part of the project.
A number of studios will be available for the «Artist-in-Residence» program and the «Art Exchange» program will provide accommodations and full board for the artists as well, sponsored on private base. Another future project will be the «International Summer Academy for Sculpture.»
art-st-urban supports the «International Student Award in Contemporary Sculpture» and is closely collaborating with the International Sculpture Center (ISC) in Hamilton, New Jersey (USA).
skulpturenpark art-st-urban
The park will showcase a wide variety of sculptures by regional, national, and international artists that can be freely accessed by the general public at any time.
The magnificent park and the entire area of the abbey with its characteristic buildings provide an exquisite background for the displayed sculptures; the exhibits will be periodically supplemented and changed. The installation of the works will be accomplished in several phases, however, the first sculptures can already be viewed.
Donor association of the «Friends of art-st-urban»
The members of the donor association «Friends of art-st-urban» have come together in this unique platform for art and culture to support and sponsor art exhibitions and educational art programs.
art-st-urban is pioneering new methods. Donations will be used transparently and solely for art projects (entire exhibits, selected works of art, or art education). These projects can be designed to match the personal preferences of private or corporate donors, enabling every donor to become an integral participant in the endeavor. Donors will always have the opportunity to gain personal insight into the process by observing the direct application and implementation of their contribution.
